I received an Advance Uncorrected Proof of The Practical Navigator in a Goodreads Giveaway

On the whole I enjoyed the book. I really liked the ending and throughout most of the book I was convinced it was going to end a different way that I would not have been happy about, so I was pleasantly surprised. Relieved both that it was not as predictable as I thought and that it ended on a more satisfying note. The character development in the book was very strong for the most part, but perhaps too many characters got a voice and it felt "clunky" in parts. I'm also not sure the navigation notes were even needed between sections. I could not stand Anita and I found her to be selfish and unsympathetic. I felt for Michael and liked Jaime, Penelope, Fari and Leo and Luis. The story grabbed me right away and kept me hooked throughout.… (altro)

Loved this book and story. The main character, Michael Hodge, is a contractor running a construction business, but he was a professional surfer at one time, before an injury ended his career. He's just a likeable, stand-up kind of guy. Everyone in the story is flawed and has been hurt in some way, has failed in some way. But the story tells how each one deals with that, some drown their sorrows, while others show their strength and get on with the business of life, even if not quite the life they imagined but the cards they were dealt. Very human, relatable characters.

Just picked this up during a very quick trip to the library, knowing absolutely nothing about it and it was a great read. Highly recommended

Everyone has a story. If you look at every member of every family, you'll find that each one of them has a separate story. The stories parallel but rarely are they identical. Each one diverges based on view point.

This story follow Michael Hodge, a surfer, son, father, husband, contractor, ex-husband and many more to come in the future. We follow his life and see how many people he has touched, the people who surround him and love him, hate him, or just somewhere in between.

He thinks he has his life together ever since his wife left him. He lives with his son and cares for his mother. He owns his own company and a girlfriend. He's happy but left frazzled as we all often are when life comes at us full speed. He watches as his mother shows signs of Alzheimer's and the everything in his house of cards seems to be falling apart.

Then his ex-wife comes back into his life, he hopes this is the beginning of something wonderful. He wants it to be perfect but any decision he makes will change the world for his son. Michael needs to be careful and he is.

This book has all the feels. It's amazing to see how one life touches so many others. Stephen Metcalfe writes with such feeling that it is hard to not experience every emotion that any one man can experience. Beautiful, heart wrenching, and joyful all at once. Fantastic!
