Randolph is a young boy from London who is sent to live with his aunt and uncle because of a war. While there, he begins to have dreams of flying and traveling to various places around the world. One night, Randolph travels to Africa and finds his father in the middle of the desert with no food or water. He helps his father get to a nearby village. In return for helping his father, one of the men gave Randolph an orange to eat, but he saved it and placed it into his pocket. When he woke up the next morning, Randolph got dressed and found that very orange still in his pocket. While the setting of this story does help the plot because it is the reason he has to move in with his aunt and uncle, but I do not think it was that significant to the story. I feel like this story could take place in any time period and would be just as relevant to children.… (altro)

Randolph's Dream tells a story about a boy who is evacuated from London to his aunt and uncle's house in a small village during World War II. That is when his dream of flying begins. One night, he flies all the way to North Africa, where he is able to rescue his father, who was lost in the dessert. In his dream, he is able to lead his father to his men from whom he was separated from during a storm. Eventually he wakes up and explains what happens in the story to his mother, aunt, and uncle. He is able to give his mother the orange that was still warm from the British soldiers in his pocket. I believe the theme of the story is that sometimes it is hard to accept new changes that are happening, and dreaming is a way of accepting or sustaining relief from the situation. The historical setting does not keep it from having relevance to today's children.… (altro)
