From birth, Howard Megdal was a baseball fan. More importantly, at least in the terms of this book, he was born a Mets fan. This book is about his love of the Mets along with his personal campaign to be elected to the office of general manager. You don't have to be a Mets fan (or a baseball fan, for that matter) to enjoy this book -- Megdal's easy narrative style combinined with the highlights and history of the Mets make this a fun and interesting read.
An enjoyable read about the glory years of the Mets. And a must read for any Mets fan! Written by a sportswriter who is also a big fan of the Team he covers... the Mets! Great insight from an expert of the game, Megdal knows his baseball!
Taking the Field by Howard Megdal is a well-written book. I'm afraid that's really all I can say about it, as I learned while reading it that I really don't know much about baseball. If you're really into baseball, or sports in general, then I suspect this is a great book for you. If, like me, you could watch a baseball game once in a while but aren't committed to a team, it might not hold your interest.
If you've ever felt that you could run your local team better than the numbskulls currently in control, this is the book for you. Megdal is more than knowledgeable about the Mets and baseball and provides illumination on all aspects of running a team. He is also flat-out funny. If the Mets won't have him, maybe my Rockies will.
