One of the most gripping books I have read in my lifetime, this book left me crying so, I could hardly finish. The author is the mother of Michael Brown, the 18-year-old killed by police in Ferguson, MO, and she pulls no punches. 16 when she became pregnant and warned by her mother that if she didn't abort the child it would her responsiblilty to support and raise it. And so she did. While the paternal grandparents were supportive their son was, after all, a kid, and in no way ready to be a parent. Ms. McSpadden, like all of us, and particularly teenage "us's" made her own share of mistakes, becoming pregnant again in a few years. But she got job after job after job and more at the same time when necessary, she kicked the father out after he became abusive, she made sure her kids had enough food and decent clothes and housing, whatever that took. When the school told her Michael had ADHD, she took him to her own doctor, and when drugs were recommended and they affected him she took him off and worked with him harder. She made family the center of her life, with her children, her siblings, her parents, her neighbors gathering frequently. And he grew up. He took apart old computers and put them back together. He graduated from high school in June. Then one day in August, while his mother was at work in the deli where she prepared food for catering, her sister burst in saying, "The police just shot MikeMike." A co-worker drove her to the area, where her son's body lay in the street covered by a white cloth, with only a yellow-socked foot and his cap, fallen off his head, visible. The police had the area cordoned off, and she could not approach. They would not speak to her, not acknowledge her, nothing. Four and a half hours she stood there, before they took the body away. No communication, no acknowledgement, nothing. Ever. What is known about any more of the story we've read in the papers.
Coming after reading _Evicted_ this is such a powerful story of overcoming, of being human, of struggle, and ultimately of loss. I cannot imagine the pain of this woman. I highly highly recommend the book.
