The book is part of a sunday school class on the history of the ministries of mercy and as such is right on target for the topic. It appears to be a professorial work, perhaps a rewriting for laypeople of her PhD thesis _John Calvin on the Diaconate and Liturgical Almsgiving_, perhaps that research combined with interests and studies since 1984, i'm not sure. However it is written to people with an above average interest and background in the topic, i suspect addressed mostly to pastors and professionals in this and related fields.

1: the Players and their Stage
the 16th C in general shared the assumption of earlier Christendom that the God revealed in Christ is the ultimate authority in all spheres of life pg 13
20thC compartmentalisation and lowest common denominator morality pg 13
the revaluing of the worldly, the secular, the lay pg 17

The chapter is an introduction to the reformers and the relationship of church and state in an historical context with a concluding section on sola Scriptura and the various ways the reformers thought about the authority of Scripture.

2:the Theological Context
the relationship of worship to ethics:
Calvin's themes of pietas and caritas pg 29
The worship of God always take precedence in importance, the love of the neighbor is the subordinate but inevitable corollary.
because gestures can be a cover for hypocrisy, however, our treatment of our neighbors is usually a better measure of the true worship of the heart. pg 30
almsgiving in worship is a practical bridge between Sunday and the rest of the week. pg 32
a short history lesson on the diaconate
an outline of the calvinist reformed theory of plural ministries

3:Social Context
16thC changes: centralization, laicization, and rationalization of benevolence pg 50
the question of the restraint of begging. protestants desacralized poverty. Calvin's Geneva as having established and disestablished forms of the deaconate. pg52-60
i find these pages the best in the book and if you are looking to read the book in the library or bookstore and sense whether you will read the whole thing once you get it home, i'd start with these few pages.

4: The Classical Reformed Diaconate
deacon as permanent ecclesiastical office to care for the poor and sick not just as individuals but as a church corporately. pg64
calvin's two fold office of the deacon as an outgrowth of his theology concerning the normative character of the NT church and the unity of Scripture pg 78

5: Deacons and the Diakonia since the Reformation
rise of voluntary societies outside of the institutional church due to religious renewal that fed the social conscience of believers with revival fervor pg 8
8
the 20thC and the ecumenical movement
the nature of the church as a servant, as Christ was a servant is inescapable and is a part of a claim to be faithful pg 93
the document "baptism, eucharist and ministry" from the World Council of Churches in 1982 pg 94ff

6: the future by way of the past
recommendations:
educational pg 109 dynamic or prophetic pg 110 administrative pg 113

I liked the book and intend to write insights gained from it into the class. The only short piece is that the doctrine of calling ought to have been introduced in the end of 3 or beginning of 4 to tie things together. I intend to fix this in my class notes. However the big issue, the relationship of worship to charity-love is certainly the right place to start. recommended reading
