Got about halfway through this one and just lost interest. Not really into the whole saloon vibe.

Very well done historical romance but one that I think that non romance readers would enjoy. This is the story of a Civil War nurse who, after the war, travels around delivering soldiers last words to their families. She is joined along the way by the father of one of the boys who died at her hospital. This was not just a wallpaper historical. The people and the situations felt real and true to their times. There was a bit of coincidence about how easily she found each family but I accepted it as necessary to move the plot along. There was a lot of sadness in the book of course because of the subject matter but the two of them found each other in the end. Also the heroine suffered greatly from PTSD which of course wasn't recognized then and she was sure that she was going crazy.

First of a trilogy.

I love a good hired man book. The hero here is a flawed man also a fav of mine. I liked how he turned his life around and straightened himself out and tried to make amends. The story is well written and the characterization is good. I didn't enjoy that the heroine flirted with alcoholism but that's just a quirk of mine. I did think that that element was let go without a true resolution.

This is not my first McKade book, and I have enjoyed the others I have read. That being said, reading the first half of this book was like watching paint dry. The hero: I lust after you, but I can't have you because I have to avenge my wife's death. Heroine: I lust after you, but you are a gunslinger(but he isn't) and I can't have that. Blah, blah blah. Somewhere after the first half, the hero and heroine finally got busy and things picked up a little. Nice bit of action/conflict and resolution towards the end. 2.5/5 stars… (altro)
