Mary Jane McCaffree (1911–2018)

Mary Jane McCaffree Monroe was born Mary Jane Fleming in New York City on October 28, 1911. She did secretarial work related to the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair and was a secretary at a steel company and a distillery before serving as personal secretary to Mamie Eisenhower during the 1952 mostra altro presidential campaign. McCaffree Monroe served as White House social secretary and the first lady's personal and press secretary throughout President Dwight D. Eisenhower's two terms. From 1971 to 1975, she was a protocol specialist in the Office of the Chief of Protocol. Her book, Protocol: The Complete Handbook of Diplomatic, Official and Social Usage written with Pauline Innis, was published in 1977. She died on July 23, 2018 at the age of 106.
