This isn’t the type of book you sit down and speed through. It demands a thoughtful read. My book is full of tags and notes. Some of it is a bit dated. I’d love to see an revised revisited version but 90% of it is still very relevant.

I'd been wanting to read this one for a while, and I was glad I had a huge chunk of time today to finish it. McBaine gives practical suggestions for how to create a more egalitarian structure within the LDS church, but I suspect most of her advice could be expanded to other faiths as well--and I also thought some of her insights could help me at work. I was equally validated and called to repentance as I read, and marked up the book a ton. Loved it.

This history of women’s suffrage is accessible to the average reader, and not dry or laborious as some history books can be.

McBaine chooses to provide a broader picture of women’s suffrage, by telling the story of Utah suffrage leader Emmeline B. Wells and the visit of national suffrage leaders Susan B. Anthony and Reverend Anna Howard Shaw to Salt Lake City in 1895 for the Rocky Mountain Suffrage Convention. As the subtitle suggests, the text focuses on women’s suffrage in Utah, but includes other western suffragists. McBaine uses many primary sources to tell her story, making it a valuable text for history classes.

It made me wish for a similar book about the suffrage movement in Wyoming, the first territory and then state, to grant women suffrage.

If you are interested in the history of how women got the vote in America, this book may be a valuable addition to your information library. The book focuses on how women in western states worked together to gain the vote for women. You may encounter some unfamiliar names, as well as familiar names in suffragist history.

The author includes a forward as well as back material to further expand the reader's knowledge of the topic. Extensive research references and end notes provide sources for further reading.

I received this book from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
