676. The Great Crisis in American Catholic History 1895-1900, by Thomas T. McAvoy, C.S.C. (read 30 Sep 1961) (Book of the Year) (John Gilmary Shea prize for 1957) This is a truly amazing book, and I was extremely interested in the account of the so-called Americanist heresy, which I admit I was not aware of before I read this book. This book was awarded my "Book of the Year" prize for 1961 without any qualms or doubts. Each year since 1944 I have selected the best book read in that year. 1341. A History of the Catholic Church in the United States, by Thomas T. McAvoy, C.S.C. (17 June 1975) I found this an exceptionally interesting book, especially the part which covers the years 1880 to 1910. Those are the years the author knows best, being the subject of his excellent book, The Great Crisis in American Catholic History 1895-1900 (which I read 30 Sept 1961 and which won my Best Book Read award for that year).
