In this book, the author combines an incredibly rich attention to detail, enabled by her extensive research, and a unique imagination. These two elements have allowed C.M. Mayo to construct a realistic and yet exciting historical fiction based in a little-known and under-studied area of Mexican history, that period of the French Intervention. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in history. A true page turner!

I read Mayo's fine descriptive exploration of the Sea of Cortez alongside John Steinbeck's Log of the Sea of Cortez while we were sailing in that region. Mayo's inisghts abput the people and history of the Gulf added a sense of intamcy to Steinbeck's log, and helped to mediate some of the sadness we felt as we visited places which are no longer as rich in animal life as when Steinbeck visited in the 1930s.

It reminds me of one of the most bizarre television performances I've ever seen: Timothy Bottoms in the mini-series of "East of Eden." His amateur-theatrical acting style was so exaggerated as to seem incredible. Incredible that he would have performed this way and incredible that the studio would broadcast it.… (altro)
