- Lizzy Sara May was born Lissie Sara Maij Locks to a Jewish family in the Netherlands. She was originally a ballet dancer and mime. She made her literary debut in 1956 with the poetry collection Blues voor voetstappen (Blues for Footsteps), followed by Weerzien op een plastic-huid (Reunion with a Plastic Skin). However, she is better known by her prose, which is partly autobiographical. These include the story "Father and Daughter," and several novels. She also wrote a children's book, Oom Soes heeft gehuild (Uncle Soes Cried, 1962). In 1967, she received the HG van der Vies Prize. She was married twice, the seond time to Oscar Timmers, an editor with the publishing house De Bezige Bij. Her son Rogier Proper is a film and television scriptwriter.
