R. C. F. Maugham (1866–1956)

Written in 1946, 'Jersey Under the Jackboot' offers an account of life in occupied Jersey by someone who had just lived through it. Although this is a first-hand account, there are very few (if any) autobiographical digressions; it is instead written from a stance of surprising objectivity, from which the author has done an admirable job of restraining his emotions (forming an effective contrast to Joe Mière's very personal account of the the German occupation). That said, it is perhaps a little too impersonal, however in all this is a valuable account of a very disturbing episode in Jersey history.… (altro)
