- Worked in a military radar establishment in WWII; joined British Rubber Producers Research and Development Association working on the physics of energy conservation, roadmaking and building materials, and polymers; then in 1961 emigrated to Australia to work on proteins with CSIRO, where he set up the Leather Research Section. In 1966 he became a foundation professor of physics at Macquarie University.
