I'd met Jill maybe 6-7 years after the accident; from her cheery, gracious presence you'd never realize just how much she's been through--or that she was for many months in a deathly serious condition. Her story is a powerful one, and she helpfully includes some resources at the end to help the families of other spinal/brain injuries. I LINK 'ed this book from the Mountain View Public Library and I hope that others who would benefit from the story are able to find it easily.
Synopsis from the back cover:
"Grievously injured in 2004 by a drunk driver while riding her bike in preparation for an upcoming triathlon, then-26-year-old Jill Mason began the long battle back from near-death while struggling with traumatic brain injury and paraplegia. Her story begins on the side of a Santa Rosa highway and draws on family journals and memories for the parts she can no longer remember. Her boyfriend, Alan Liu, an M.I.T.-educated engineer, was killed outright in the accident.
"Any family struggling with the consequences of brain damage or paraplegia--or both--will find much to help them cope in Couldn't Happen to Me."… (altro)
