A futuristic military sci-fi thriller that goes along the same lines of "Aliens" (the movie) and takes the tech to a whole new mindblowing level. I found the pacing a little slow in the middle as the team explores their surroundings, but I do appreciate how the author masterfully plays the intrigue card and subtly ratchets up the tension. The last 40 percent of the book however, is pure adrenalin, with non-stop action. The ending was very satisfying to say the least, with good closure and leaving many lingering, provocative thoughts. It also sets it up brilliantly for a sequel, which I am definitely hoping and hanging out for.

Some minor flaws such as spelling errors that crept through mar this otherwise splendid book.

I'd like to give 2.5 stars, but I can't. It was below average, but kept me engaged despite having to force myself to continue at times.

For a lot of people, running into grammatical/spelling mistakes is jarring and difficult to look around. I am one of those people, and "its" v. "it's" is a no-brainer that appears from start to finish. Clearly the author doesn't know the difference, and was unable to find an editor/proof-reader who did.

The characters were stereotypical and shallow. I enjoyed them at times, despite their complete lack of empathy as they burned unarmed scientists alive--wth? I guess Marines in space are douchebags? Normally you want to create sympathy for the protagonists, even the ones you're meant to dislike. Considering the effort taken to show that they have feelings under their armor, it was a very strange direction, very early in the book.

Still can't figure out Jenner and why he was ever paid attention to; I kept thinking something would actually *happen* with him, but nothing really did. I guess they needed someone to try out the repair table on?

The ultimate premise was pretty good, borderline compelling, although very little effort was spent in building the world in which they were operating. The execution was choppy, imprecise, and mis-directed. This is a book that *desperately* needed a few rounds of editing and re-work. It had great potential, IMO, but lost its way.
