- Monika Mann was one of six children of Thomas Mann, Nobel Prize-winning author, and his wife Katia Mann. After attending boarding school, she trained as a pianist and studied art history, but decided to pursue a career as a writer. In 1939, Monika was married, but her husband was killed the following year when the ship on which they were travelling to Canada to escape the Nazis was sunk by a German submarine. She joined the rest of her family in Princeton, New Jersey, and was granted USA citizenship. However, in 1958, she returned to Germany and renewed her German citizenship. She lived on the island of Capri for more than 30 years. During this period, she wrote five books and contributed regularly to Swiss, German and Italian newspapers and magazines. Her most famous works include her autobiography, Vergangenes und Gegenwärtiges (Past and Present, 1956) and her diary, Der Start, published in 1960. Her other works included a posthumously published collection of her texts, interviews, and letters, Das fahrende Haus: Aus dem Leben einer Weltbürgerin, edited by Karin Andert (2007).
