Two spirit people fall to the earth and bake clay figures to keep them company. This picture book is based on a traditional West African story that explains how people of different colours were created.

A beautiful African tale that depicts the creation of all humankind with a great understanding that there was not only race of people, but many different races. This tale made me smile and see that other cultures had a more advanced way of seeing beyond their own race and culture.

There are many different reasons why I liked this book. One reason is that it demonstrates that women and man’s work can be the same amount of work even though it is different types of work. Another reason is that if a student is struggling to read this book then they can just look at the pictures and get a glimpse of what is happening. The story is about a man and a wife who switch jobs for the day because the man complains that his work is harder than hers. He soon realizes that his work may have not been as hard as he thought it was. As I said before, the illustrations of the book showed the students what was going on in the story. It showed all the frustration and craziness that was happening. The language the author used was very descriptive and repetitive at times. An example of the story being descriptive was “they’d found the oats, scratched and scattered them over the floor. And they’d left chicken droppings mixed in with the cream”. With all of this descriptive the readers can easily picture what was happening. An example of the story being repetitive was after something bad happened the man would always say, “Oh well, Gone is gone.” The big idea of the story is to show students that a man’s job and a woman’s job can be equally hard. Someone cannot say that another person’s work is easier unless they actually do that persons work and see.… (altro)
