This work sets out to show that the form of personal life is determined by the mutuality of person relationship, so that the unit of human life is not the "I" alone but the" you and I."
The author is concerned to establish the primacy of action in the process of self realization, the manner the in which the forms of reflective activity are derived from and related to action, and the importance of the practical and human experience.
This book relates the authors personal and professional attempt to create a philosophy of religion which can be warranted by experience and by the available evidence.
> À ce moment-là je lisais les ouvrages de John Macmurray, La liberté dans le monde moderne et Raisons et émotions, qui traitaient de sujets éthiques et psychologiques d’une manière qui me paraissait proche de celle de Svâmiji. Svâmiji lut ces deux livres et sur le deuxième, il dit que si lui-même devait écrire sur ce sujet, il ne pourrait certainement pas faire mieux que l’auteur. Pendant les années qui suivirent, je considérai Raisons et émotions comme une nouvelle Gîta et je le recommandai à plusieurs de mes amis que l’approche originale de Svâmiji intéressait.
