Alessandra Lynch is the author of three previous collections of poems, Sails the Wind Left Behind (Alice James Books), It was a terrible cloud at twilight (Pleiades/LSU Press, winner of the Lena-Miles Wever Todd Award), and Daylily Called It a Dangerous Moment (finalist for the LA Times Poetry Book mostra altro Prize and winner of the 2017 Balcones Prize in Poetry). This was an appropriate read for right now. With the exception of the last chapter, "In the beautiful static of Winter", this is dark, brooding poetry about sexual violence, harassment, violation....

Many of these poems are a tough read but are exactly for this moment.

Watch the news, read this book...you'll get it.

Incidentally, this was my second pull-down from the new poetry shelf at my local library.

There were some interesting thoughts and turns of phrase here, but most of the poems left me wanting more, and none of them are poems I'd feel the need to come back to. On the whole, I wanted more meaning, more polish, more depth. This isn't a collection I'd recommend, I'm afraid, though I might come back to the poet after two or three collections to see where she's reached. All of these seem promising, and many of them are based on interesting ideas---they just come across as unfinished or given too little time, at least for this reader.… (altro)
