- Princess Stephanie of Belgium was born at the royal palace in Laeken, a daughter of King Leopold II and Queen Marie Henriette. In 1881, a few weeks shy of her 17th birthday, she was married to Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria. He was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and on his accession, she would have become Empress. After her husband was found dead at the hunting lodge at Mayerling, she remarried to the Hungarian Count Lonyay. Despite the opposition of her royal in-laws, she published her memoirs.
