To much of the people and too little of the riding.

Vladimir Littauer served in the Russian cavalry from 1911 to 1920. In the Sumsky Hussars until the revolution then in various raggle-taggle White units until January 1920. Seeing the writing clearly on the wall he, his father and sister (with their housekeeper) escaped to Japan, Canada and the USA.
His prewar escapades could be those of any European cavalryman in the years before the war. His wartime experiences are told modestly and provide an interesting counterpoint to those wishing to condemn the Russian Imperial officer corps. The story of his escape across the border to the Ukraine is too farcical not to be true.
A very enjoyable read, I wanted more.
Savage Squadrons, Sergei Kournakoff, tells a similar story from a different view point.
