I bought this because I will be traveling to this area, and found many good reviews. But it is terrible, really. Poorly written, poorly edited, with many half empty pages, many photographs unsharp, mr lister tells us about his travels in toe-curling detail. Do I really need to know that he 'took a brief nap, before enjoying a late afternoon swim'? Or - next page - that after a nice breakfast he took a swim in the clear warm water? Give me a break! Utterly uninteresting. Didn't finish the book.

The author travels throughout Senegal describing the sights and sometimes smells of the country. He describes, for example, the “door of no return,” where many slaves left Africa for the new world, and the picture on the cover, one of the largest statues in the world, far bigger than the Statue of Liberty. He also complains about negative incidents he encounters—some so inconsequential I found it frustrating. He‘s not an experienced travel writer. But I appreciated the book nonetheless because I learned so much about this country.… (altro)

This was a fairly interesting book. It definitely isn’t a standard guidebook, but it does provide some valuable on the ground info. I learned some intriguing facts, such as food is only eaten with the right hand in the region and that there are usually more ATMs available than you might think (essential in a mainly cash economy).
I would have preferred some more information on the post-colonial history like a mention of the Senegambia Confederation, as well as some maps with routes the author took. Some proofreading would also be beneficial. Overall though, it was a pretty good book.
Please note that I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the LibraryThing Member Giveaway.
