- Doorthy Demetracapoulou was born in Constantinople (now Istanbul) where her father was the Greek ambassador to Turkey. She won a scholarship to Vassar College and went on to earn a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. She went back to Europe in 1931 for futher education before returning to the USA. She married Dr. Otis Lee, a philosophy professor who became chairman of the Department of Philosophy at Vassar College, and the couple had four children. Dorothy D. Lee became a professor of anthropology at Vassar, and then a member of the faculty at Harvard University. After her husband's death, she moved around the country teaching at various universities including San Fernando State College in California and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She was the author of "Freedom and Culture," an anthropology text widely used in colleges and universities.
