Arnold Lazarus was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. His intention was to become a journalist, but he became intrigued by psychology instead. After receiving his clinical training in behavior modification with phobic patients, Lazarus became one of the leaders in promoting behavior therapy in mostra altro South Africa. Increasingly unhappy with the political situation in South Africa, he brought his family to the United States in 1967 to settle in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lazarus's major contribution, "multimodal assessment," evolved out of his view that conventional therapy was too limited.
