Alexa lives in priviledged home in Britain and loves riding horses although her mother is trying to matchmake her with a suitable husband and make her more ladylike. Her father rules the land around their farm, but the year is 475. Britain has become influenced by the Roman culture but barbarians still conduct frequent raids. On one of these raids Alexa suddenly finds her future becomes very uncertain and she must make decisions that will put her life in danger and may leave her penniless.
