This was an interesting, if slightly dated travelogue. I feel that I gained a little insight into a country and it's history. I'd like to know more. I am particularly interested in the indigenous people of Bolivia and what life is like for them. I would have liked this book to focus on that aspect of the country more.
This book becomes much more interesting once the author gets out of Istanbul and into the hinterlands of Turkey. By and large, this book presents a fairly realistic look at what it's like to travel in a Turkey. My biggest frustration with the book is with the publisher who did not find it worthwhile to commission a map showing the path of Mr. Lawlor's travels.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story of British Malaya, an examination of the circumstances surrounding a murder and sensational trial of an English woman, Ethel Proudfoot in 1911. But don't worry, it reads like a great escapist novel.
