An entertaining graphic history of a dark event in baseball history. The book provides not only biographical information concerning Chapman and Mays but also a brief history of the times and culture of baseball in the early 20th century.

The excellent graphic novel depicts the lives of Ray Chapman, the only major league player to have been killed by a pitch and Carl Mays, the N.Y. Yankee who threw it. While not very sympathetic to Mays, who apparently no one liked, it does show how he became the man he was. Lawless makes the story leading up to the fatal pitch come alive. It sticks in your mind long after you have finished reading it. Highly recommended.

Lawless is flawless in her telling of the story of Ray Chapman's death by fastball in 1920. She is a master of the facts, as well as of her art, and presents us with a tightly-told, charmingly-illustrated, terrigyingly-true tall tale.

Quite enjoyable, given the tragic subject. Holly Lawless uses her art to tell the tale of the only fatal pitch in professional baseball, the one Carl Mays threw at Ray Chapman. The book has the feel of the historical comic books I used to read as a kid and it's certainly age-appropriate for young baseball fans. Lawless fills the book with broad outlines and interesting tidbits concerning the fatal pitch itself, the two men involved, the aftermath, plus American culture and the culture of baseball. Lawless's illustrations are quite good and it's a quick read. Definitely worth a look if you interested in baseball history.… (altro)
