This book really is a very fine study of addiction, and the second fine novel I’ve read recently about inner Montreal.

It had a rather unsettling happy ending, not quite what I was expecting, and I suppose it is a reflection of the autobiographical nature of the story and how the author views himself on the other side of gambling addiction and a very wayward youth.

The pace of the story is quite strong, the characters memorable if a little sketchy.

I have mixed feelings about this one. At times, I loved it (especially the scenes in the restaurant kitchen); other times, I was a bit bored. But I didn't want to stop reading...I was compelled to find out what happens to our hero, Stephane. I was cheering for him all the way!

This is the story of a young graphic arts student with a serious gambling addiction. He has borrowed from his girlfriend, failed to pay his share of the rent and lost an advance a friend paid him for some design work. He takes a job as a dishwasher -- where he does well, making friends and earning the respect of his colleagues and bosses. He misses his girlfriend but can't seem to stop his gambling.... I so wanted him to heal and succeed in life, even when I found the story dragged a bit. Maybe it should have been shortened a little? So a mixed bag overall.… (altro)

A simple story of a want-to-be-artist that has to come to terms with the reality of his vices and get out of his own way. The pacing and phrasing of this novel is in beautiful contrast to the raw story told. The sense of place is unforgettable. From the behind the scenes look of working in a restaurant to the weight of addiction, I devoured every page as I found myself hopeful for the underdog in this brilliant debut.
