Rich Larson (1) (1992–)

This was very interesting short read. Written in style of Parker novels we follow our main character as heist team gets organized for a strike aiming at the local mafioso. As it goes it is not only just heist but a revenge undertaking.

Set in Spain in not so distant future we are given a glimpse into the future world where everything is possible if one has money. Cybernetic and biological upgrades, face and whole appearance changes (yes, gender too - out of everything in this story most of people got hooked on this, I guess they do not read much of SF and especially cyberpunkish stuff like this), programs allowing for development of short lived but unbreakable languages used as codes for message exchanges. Of course we have virtual reality used for training the heist to a minute detail and for learning huge amounts of data in a couple of hours.

Characters are interesting. Considering the amount of space this story has they are all pretty much defined, from our hero and narrator, his accomplices, crime boss Quini the Squid, to brutal gangers securing the fort.

Fast paced, very cinematic and with quite a few original ideas this is very interesting action story. I hope author will write a full novel, he obviously has a lot of material he can work with.

Ce roman court de Rich Larson est un mélange des genres : science-fiction car l'action se déroule au fin fond de l'espace, sur la carcasse d'un animal gigantesque faisant office de mini-planète et aventure à l'ancienne car une chasse au trésor est vite entamée par les différents protagonistes de l'histoire, le tout saupoudré de dialogues qui ne dénatureraient pas dans un film de Quentin Tarantino. L'inventivité de l'auteur au niveau des animaux et des des mots les décrivant est malheureusement absente du déroulé de l'intrigue qui est d'un classicisme décevant. Dommage.… (altro)
