This debut’s central plotline is about mother whose daughter has a mysterious ailment that doctors cannot diagnose even though the child has been screaming in pain and clutching her stomach for four years.

There is a secondary plotline about a woman who poses as a psychic but isn’t psychic.

When the two plotlines collide, the book seems to rush toward an ending some readers may have seen coming since the very early chapters.

Neither of the two main characters are well drawn. Rena in particular needed more in order to justify the ending. Claire is the more likable of the two even though she’s a fraud. The author’s writing style seemed forced and disjointed in some of the book.

If you don’t like your thrillers set around the life of a child, ignore the hype around this book and don’t pick it up. If you can read thrillers where a child’s life is at stake, then this just may be the book for you.
