Michelle Kwan

I like this book for three reasons. First, I like the book because the illustrations enhance the story. The illustrations are pictures that directly relate to the text and demonstrate Michelle’s life through the images. The pictures all capture real-life images of Michelle Kwan throughout her life. For instance, there are pictures of Michelle as a child, of her with her family, and of her ice-skating. In this way, the book’s illustrations add to the story.
Second, I like the book because it is in the first person point of view of Michelle Kwan. Because the book is written from Michelle’s point of view, the book is able to accurately display her life and her ideas about how she grew up. For instance, she states, “skating is in my heart and not my head.” This quote displays Michelle’s devotion and love for ice-skating. Without her first person account, the book would lack the depth in the book that displays her inner feelings and emotions toward her life.
Third, I like the book because the writing is organized in an interesting manner. Throughout the book, the writing is formatted in both paragraphs and in captions for the pictures. This allows the book to provide information on Michelle’s life as well as describe the pictures and illustrations that are present in the book. For instance, in the section on competitions, one page contains a few paragraphs briefly describing the section. Then, there are pictures and captions within the section that follow the paragraphs. One caption states, “Some of my favorite moves.” This describes four pictures of Michelle ice-skating. Because the writing is organized in text as well as captions, the book provides a deeper understanding into the book that increases its level of interest. In addition, by organizing some of the writing in a caption form, it emphasizes the importance of the pictures.
This whole book contains the big idea of describing Michelle Kwan’s life including descriptions on herself, her family, and her dedication to ice-skating. The book employs illustrations of Michelle, captions, and descriptions in order to accurately describe Michelle’s memories growing up.
