Looking for diamonds in the South Africa of 1874. There is gunplay and a love interest, but it isn't great literature.

I have nmot read this all through, but my mother said it had a plot like Chaucer's Pardoner's Tale, with a group of thieves gradually being wiped out.

A kind of King Solomon's MInes with Zulus added -- American adventurers looking for (and more or less finding) the mines of Ophir in southern Africa in the time of Shaka (here spelled Tchaka).

I read this book when I was about 13 years old and just thoght it was the greatest book ever. Got swept up in the romance of it all and just fell in love with Ireland. When I discovered that the Cliffs of Moher (which are the title cliffs) were an actual place I vowed to visit them one day. Fast forward a bit more than 10 years and I got my wish on a 2 week bike trip in Ireland. I told my friend K. that I didn't care where we biked so long as the Cliffs were on the itinerary. I can still remember perching on the precarious limestone slabs and dreaming I was Grania :-)… (altro)
