David Kinley holds the Chair in Human Rights Law at the University of Sydney. An internationally renowned expert in the field, he has advised governments and corporations on human rights issues and has worked with the UN, the World Bank, AusAID and various NGOs. This is his seventh book.

In this book David Kinley makes the connection between finance and human rights. This is a readable text that requires concentrated attention. Kinley methodically builds his case for the need of financial reform in order to preserve and extend human rights. The book is well researched and balanced in its approach. Kinley argues that both financiers and human rights activists need to drop their hubris and work together to create financial systems that serve society. The majority of the book is devoted to outlining the current problems with the world’s financial systems. The last chapter considers how to address these problems. Kinley recognizes the challenges involved in reforming financial systems. He proposes no panacea. Government officials, financiers, corporate executives, human rights activists, and many others will need to cooperate to devise ways to end the rapacious practices of financial players while balancing the role of self-interest in finance and the sector’s responsibilities to the greater good. Financiers, government personnel and legislators, and human rights activists need to read this book. The text should be required reading for finance and business students.
