I expected this to be hard to read, given the subject. I didn't expect it to also fill my heart with hope as I followed King on a walk through her life. She has a unique voice, one that gently walks the reader through some of the best and worst moments, as she sought out the truth that her parents tried to bury. Rising above the trauma of the past to not only survive, but thrive, this is one memoir I'm glad I read, and one that I won't soon forget.

When Laura’s husband asks her for a divorce, her heart is cracked. Then it is further shattered when she learns the reason is because he has been with another woman, and she is pregnant with their child. Broken and alone she flees to a conference in Albuquerque, and then takes the first shuttle to Santa Fe. What she finds there is extraordinary.
When we get married, two individuals become one. The trick is to find a balance where the original individuals are not lost completely. This book deals with gaining the power of finding yourself and the understanding it is okay to do so. I would recommend this book to anyone who is has been or is going through a divorce. I would also recommend it to anyone who is still happily married and feels like they may be missing a part of themselves. Read this book if you are lost in someone’s shadow, even if it is your own.

I was given a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review.

When Laura's husband Zach tells her he wants a divorce after 40 years of marriage because he has 'fallen' in love with another woman (Abby) who is pregnant with their child, Laura's life is literally turned upside down from one moment to the next. What is even more painful for her is that she was unable to have a child and her husband had always refused to agree for them to adopt a child.

So now aged 60 what does she do? On the spur of the moment she takes the shuttle to Sante Fe. She has no clear plan but she knows that she needs to start afresh and change her life. The only thing is that in order to do that she must make significant change within herself, her attitudes and mind-set and can she do that? But if she can't nothing will ever change.

Laura has to focus on reconnecting with the person she truly is rather than what she has become - the submissive housewife - making true friends along the way, Laura learns how to rebuild her self-confidence and self-worth and to take control of her life again.

This is a very thought-provoking story and will resonate with those of us who have had life-changing events unexpectedly thrown upon us.
