C'est finalement en rappelant que Jésus est le vrai frère aîné, le meilleur, car il est prêt à aller chercher ceux qui se perdent pour les réconcilier au père, qu'il expose le message principal de la parabole adressée directement aux pharisiens, qui avaient failli dans leur rôle de "grand frère".
