Preben Kannik (1914–1967)

This book picks up in the seventeenth century (with two examples from the sixteenth) and runs down to "contemporary" 1960s. It is largely European, but does include the 18th century colonial conflicts in America, the Latin American Wars of Independence, and the Russo-Japanese War. The European wars include some less-known struggles in northern and eastern Europe -- the Scanian War, the War of the Polish Succession, the Polish Struggle for Independence, the Russo-Swedish War of 1790, etc. although naturally there is much more on the Napoleonic Wars, and later on the world wars. There is also a historical introduction by the original author and additional introductions on British uniforms and military nomenclature by the editor of the English edition. The main focus is on the colored plates, but there are notes with each plate discussion the specific unit represented and the war it served in. As with my ther books of military pictures, I used this for painting miniatures when young.… (altro)
