A decent overview, but not as much of a tour de force as DeFrancis's The Chinese Language: Fact and Fantasy, which I would recommend over this book.
bought fall/winter 2007/8 for 130RMB
Really too advanced for me, but I am finding the Chinese language fascinating and I am looking forward to actually taking some classes when the girls are back in school.
