The book What Do You See? features pictures by Janina Domanska where she uses an unique style of art to portray the different animals featured. These complex illustrations reveal the simplistic aspect of different animals’ lives and what they perceive to be true. This non-fiction book opens the audience eyes to how small or big animals perceive the world. Not only that, but each animal is permanent above what they believe about the world.
This book can be used with preschool through kindergarten because of the simple, short text. It introduces observations and asks questions about what we may see as readers. It encourages thinking outside the box rather than what we’re regularly used to. The illustrations are bold and colorful with individual pictures that show us how each animal sees the world. In this book, the illustrations play a major role because they explain the text a little more in depth while focusing on each animal. Each picture we can see as readers what the animals see and how they perceive the world.
With each observation make we can formulate inferences towards the end or at the end of the book. At the end of the story we can begin to understand how things are seen differently within animals and humans. It invites students to think about how things look to different animals and how we can emphasize on that. We can begin to explore the world of observations and how we can form questions about different animals and their habitat.
