I've had this book for a very long time (years) but I've never really used it. I kept it as a reference guide "just-in-case"... Well Just-in-case is here!

I'm working on mixed media, I've even taken two classes, but what I didn't learn was how to blend the paint once it was on the sub-strait.... and this book shows me hoe to do that & add even more interesting effects!

Great step-by-step & easy to follow illustrations!

I am so glad I saved this book!

‘Mixed-Media Master Class’ by Sherrill Kahn covers 50 or more techniques for use on paper and/or fabrics. It is a great reference book for anyone wanting to improve or change their artwork. ‘Mixed-Media Master Class’ is also a very good book for beginning students. Kahn shows examples of what the project looks like and then, she lists the steps on how to do the techniques. Kahn uses wonderful photography to aid the students’ learning.
Some of the techniques in ‘Mixed-Media Master Class’ include using resists such as petroleum jelly, using textures, stenciling, making rubbings, making and using handmade stamps, silk screening, how to use lutrador, Transfer Artist Paper (TAP), and computer-printed images.
I like Kahn’s book because no matter what level you are as an artist, there will always be able to learn more from it. It is a great book to help resolve your artist’s block!

All-in-all this is an excellent source of creative ideas for using mixed-media materials to embellish paper and fabric collage and to make mixed-media jewelry. I have two caveats.

First, a lot of the materials she's using are thermoset plastics: Tyvek, fun foam, shrink-plastic, plastic protectors. She's then heating them with irons, heat guns, etc. This process releases some of the chemicals in the plastics into the air. Are these chemicals harmful? No one knows because no one has tested these products with the idea that individuals would stand over them and melt them. If you're avoiding using polymer clay because you're worried about what you're breathing, you probably don't want to make a regular habit of using these materials with heat.

Second, while she explains pretty clearly how to make the embellishment, she gets very sketch about how to attach the embellishment to the projects. The more I work with mixed-media the more I'm conscious that attaching things in a way that is durable is tricky and non-obvious. This book isn't going to help you with that.
