Charlotte Marshall is an author and stuck for an idea for her third book. All she has on the page is a blinking cursor. Then she remembers a time twenty years before when her mom hurriedly shut off the radio as the news reported a young girl – the victim of rape and murder. She begins to search for archives of that story. The writer’s block was gone, but she needed more detail so she stumbles upon a website listing unsolved murders by state. She begins to find over twenty more young girls who over the twenty year period were similar in their looks and stature and all killed in similar circumstances. All but one.

She brings her research to the FBI. She speaks with Special Agent in Charge Jack Moore. He and another agent show an interest in what she’s found. Shortly after, she gets attacked. Did the FBI have a leak? How else would she now be the target of this monster? Now she needs to determine who she can trust. She can’t run forever.

Run is a quick read (160 pp) told in first person narrative by Charlotte Marshall. Just a tad slow at the beginning but it quickly picks up and continues to move at a fast pace. There is sort of a paranormal aspect. In Charlotte’s dreams, the girls come to her and give her clues as well as warnings. The character personalities are well defined, even that of Charlotte’s dog, Max, and her cat, Kitty. The book’s contents are listed in dates and times so the reader can quickly see that in total, the story goes from March 14, 2012 to April 9, 2012. The book is a complete story in itself, but leaves an opening into the book Stand which follows. Rating: 4 out of 5.

Book Review: Nourished by Becky Johnson and Rachel Randolph

A Search for Health, Happiness, and a Full Night’s Sleep

This book was unique in the fact that it was authored by a mother-daughter team. This team effort brought in freshness and a little bit of delightfulness.

I found the style of writing to be very personable and a whole lot of story. It felt a little bit like chatting with friends, but more like only listening to friends chatting, since there was no real interaction of course. At times it felt like listening to two monologues.

Some of the conversation was slightly humorous and there was a touch of delight but since lots of story is not my favorite style of nonfiction book to read, at times I found it extremely boring.

There was not a whole lot of how-to, actual useful information, that is, the promises made in the sub-title of health, happiness and sleep information. If there was, you sure had to hunt and search for it and slog through all that story stuff in order to find it.

None of the content was bad by any stretch of the imagination, it was just not my style. Some people will find this entire book truly delightful I’m sure.

Not only was this book big on story telling, it made you feel like you were not alone. Those were its two biggest pluses.

If you are a fan of lots of story and like to get to know your book authors you will probably really enjoy this book.

Charlotte Marshall still wakes up most nights screaming. She is still traumatized nine months after she faced the killer of twenty-three young girls. His name was Lawrence Pheares – she calls him a monster. But he’s dead now. She’s in counseling for PTSD; she’s taking intensive self-defense classes at Joe’s Gym; and she owns a top of the line security system for her home. Pheares wasn’t alone; he had a partner of sorts – Georgia. Georgia is free and alive and not to be taken lightly.

Charlotte is a writer. That’s how she found Pheares in the first place, or more accurately, he found her. She was doing research investigating the murder of several of the young girls. While she’s still deathly afraid, she realizes she can’t stay holed up in her home only going out to the gym every day and to her family occasionally. She joins an online research agency looking for missing people; it’s called FindMe. She begins engrossing herself in the disappearance of a man five years prior. He walked out of his law firm one day for lunch and never returned. But, Georgia is biding her time and waiting.

The first book in this series is Run. It is the story of Charlotte’s involvement with Pheare’s and his murder of twenty-three girls. I had not read Run before reading Stand, and I did feel like there was much I was missing. This is clearly not a series that should be read out of order. In the beginning of Stand, I felt that Charlotte was both strong and weak – strong because of all that’s she’d endured and was still had a determination to keep going — weak because she suffers with PTSD and relies heavily on routine to get through each day. I really liked Charlotte and I liked the people she worked with at the gym. Jack, FBI, also frequents the gym; he’d been her savior in her battle with Pheares. It’s a short read, but very intense. I rated Stand at 4.5 out of 5.
