Breve biografia
Erika Johansen grew up and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She went to Swarthmore College, earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and eventually became an attorney, but she never stopped writing.

She is a debut author who graduated from the celebrated Iowa Writers' Workshop. Johansen claims she heard then-Senator Obama give a speech in 2007 and was inspired to create the series' idealistic heroine, 19-year-old Kelsea Glynn. The author completed the novel over a four-year period while finishing law school as well.

This is a most excellent trilogy. Having devoured it, I will now be buying it.
Fantastic world building, such compelling characters that stay with you long after you've finished reading. Well-written and solid plotting (of both kinds!).

Kelsea is a true hero.

However, I would not suggest this is a YA book. There is gore, violence, and brutality (and plenty of swearing). Some tough stuff to read through but never gratuitous.

This book was incredible. I wish I had saved it for my 2021 challenge because it fit a lot of the prompts. I really enjoyed the characters and the world building, and I'll definitely be picking up book 2. I did find it a bit more "adult" than other YA novels, not the entire thing but a few lines every few chapters were far from PG.

I find this series to be really refreshing and a bit darker than others in the genre, but this book itself wasn't as good as the first. I enjoyed it, but wasn't as hooked or amazed. It might be because so much of it was set in New York, or it's just really ramping up for book 3.

Would fit The 52 Book Club's 2021 prompts:
3 - A Dual Timeline
17 - A Character On The Run
19 - Book With A Deckled Edge
25 - A Book With Multiple Character POV
32 - A Selfish Character
40 - Found via #Bookstagram
47 - A Character With A Disability
48 - A Cover With A Woman Who Is Facing Away
… (altro)
