Breve biografia
Abby Jimenez is a New York Times bestselling author and Food Network champion living in Minnesota. Abby founded Nadia Cakes out of her home kitchen back in 2007. The bakery has since gone on to win numerous Food Network competitions and has amassed an international cult following. Abby loves a good romance, coffee, doglets, and not leaving the house.

Emma and her best friend Maddy are travel nurses: they work somewhere for three months, then choose somewhere new. But they change their plans from Maddy's next pick (Hawaii) to go to Minnesota when Emma gets in touch with Justin through reddit: both Emma and Justin seem to be "good luck charms," in that whoever they date finds their soulmate right after they break up. To break the curse, Emma and Justin decide to date each other: then, they'll each meet the love of their lives when they break up with each other.

Instead, Emma and Justin fall in love - but there are a few wrinkles. Like, Justin is about to get custody of his three younger siblings when their mom goes to prison for embezzling, and Emma is afraid to actually get close to anyone because her mom Amber repeatedly abandoned and neglected her when she was a child. And Amber surfaces - not to see Emma, but to date Emma's landlord and boss (Neil is a surgeon at Royaume, where Emma and Maddy are working). Maddy predicts that it's only a matter of time before Amber does her usual Amber thing and leaves them in a mess, but Emma refuses to warn Neil about Amber, hoping she has turned a corner.

Through the heavy family drama on both sides, Emma and Justin keep showing up for each other, taking comfort in each other's presence, and falling in love. But when Emma discovers the depth of Amber's lies and deception, they have a huge fight, and Emma flees, her anger finally overpowering her empathy.

Less steamy than many romances, but compulsively readable. An epilogue six months after the fact ties up most loose ends. Alexis and Daniel (Part of Your World) make an appearance, and Justin wears a Jaxon Waters (The Happy Ever After Playlist) t-shirt, in a nod to main characters in Jimenez' other books. Nadia Cakes is mentioned once as well.

"You know how when something bad happens to someone you love, and you wish you could take it from them instead? ...What if the universe listened?" (95)

"I've had a lot of bad things happen to me...I think sometimes the key to happiness is framing those things a different way." (95)

It was like there was no peaceful place to exist, no emotional safe space. I could have chaos, or I could have worry. I could be in the tornado, or I could be in the eye. But I could never be out of the storm. (Emma, 103)

It's funny how when you find someone you like as much as I liked her, the destination is suddenly wherever they are. Even if there's someplace better, you wouldn't go if they couldn't come. (Justin, 205)

Not everything that comes out of a crisis is bad. Sometimes your traumas are the reason you know how to help. (Emma, 245)

"You deserve to be appreciated, Emma."
"I think I'm just used to feeling like I'm asking too much when I need something." (337)

"You are not what happened to you. You are what you do next." (Maddy to Emma, 368)

This book was amazing! I read in very quick because I just could not put it down! The building up of the romance and the fake dating was amazing! Everything I could want in a romance novel is this!

I don’t gush over books, I either like them or I don’t but this one. I’m GUSHING. Holly is a hospice nurse tasked with caring for her grandma. I didn’t know if I could handle that and I barely did but somehow through tears there was so much laughter. I absolutely LOVED this story. If this is any reflection of this author she is absolutely my new favorite, easily.

A slow burn? A beautiful disaster?
I have no idea.
All I know is that I loved it and if I ever read an Abby Jimenez book that doesn’t make me cry I’ll be sure to alert the news.
