I enjoyed this book. Seems like there are quite a few negative reviews but it is historical fiction. I have read other HF books on Frances Stuart and this isn't that much different so I'm not sure what the complaints are founded on. I found it light, quick reading and the story progressed at a great pace. It was very entertaining and I found myself liking Frances Stuart throughout. A very enjoyable read.

I found this to be an easy read. It is clear the author did a lot of research about Frances Stuart, which also made it interesting to me since this is a time period (King Charles II) I'm not very familiar with.

I enjoyed the beginning a lot more. As it got closer to the end, it started to plod. But if you like historical novels and this time period, check it out.

This novel follows Marie Mancini, the niece of a powerful cardinal in the court of French King Louis XIV. As Marie and Louis fall in love, she becomes the target of her uncle's wrath because her relationship with the king threatens to unravel his carefully laid political plans. Marie also has to contend with the king's mother and competition from her own sister who was once the king's mistress. Marie must find a way to bring down her uncle for her own safety and for her future with Louis. She combines her occult talents with those of her slave Morena and uses witchcraft, astrology, and more to bring down her rivals and secure her place as Queen of France. Based on real people and real events, this novel is also interspersed with historical commentary about Marie Mancini and her relationship with Louis XIV. I loved the combination of history, romance, intrigue, and high politics in this book. It is also a must-read for lovers of French history.

I could not wait to get my hands on this novel, and in the end it was just alright. I felt that the Frances Stuart depicted here fell flat and was shallowly written. The novel does follow a well thought out arch and there are many interesting supporting characters, that at times are more interesting than the main character.
