This story is about two brothers: Bumpy and Skippy. One day, Skippy and Bumpy run out of food in their burrow. Skippy is very hungry and starts crying because he is so hungry. Bumpy decides to go out and look for some food for Skippy. He began to ask his close friends and neighbors for some extra food or spare food for Skippy. All of his friends say no, "we only have food for ourselves". Bumpy is desperate and breaks down around a pond and asks for food for his brother. After his moment of sorrow, he suddenly sees a mushroom bud. He knows that it is not enough for Skippy to eat, so he decides to plant the bud. Seeing his desperation, the Sun, Rain and Earth decide to help Bumpy. They all give the mushroom bud sunlight, rain and support and soon the mushroom bud begins to grow and grow. Bumpy is so excited and tells Skippy. Together, they think that the mushroom is so big taht they cannot finish it all by themselves. So they decide to tell their friends and invite them to eat. The friends are so grateful for the invitation and recognize that they were wrong to not help Bumpy before. Bumpy and Skippy live under the mushroom forever and happily.

This book has the theme of selflessness. Any grade level would benefit from the message itself. As for the breakdown of the literature. The illustrations are so vivid and colorful, lower grades would be invested in the book and engaged. Their activity would be to sequence the events of the story: identify the main events, characters, and problem/solution. Upper grades could do the same but with more detailed. They can be more descriptive, such as recognizing Bumpy's character traits and use text to support inferences.

This is a fun book to read. It is an easy read. I really love the message of selflessness and friendship. I believe that it would inspire students to do "the right thing" when they encounter a similar situation. Also, I think students would reflect themselves on Bumpy's character. Some students have experienced this situation with a younger or older sibling that they can share or write about. Great story.

Summary: Skippy and his brother have nothing to eat. Skippy's brother begins to cry. Skippy feels so bad for his brother that he sets out to find some food. Skippy is having no luck finding any, he even asks his friends. All of his friends say the same thing, and that is that they only have enough for themselves. Skippy is feeling like he has let his brother down. That is until he finds a dried up mushroom bud. Of course it is so tiny and Skippy doesn't think it is enough. So Skippy comes up with an idea to plant the little bud in hope that it will grow. The sun, rain and earth all feel sad for Skippy so they all help out. With their help the mushroom bud grows and grows. It grows so big that Skippy shares the food with his friends even though they didn't share anything with him.

Critique: Well I really liked this book. The only thing I didn't like is how Skippy had a pink flower in his head. This will confuse students because I know it confused me. I kept thinking Skippy was a girl, but he was a boy. I like how the story taught a good lesson. That lesson was that no matter how others treat you, it isn't right to treat them the same. All of Skippy's friends told him that they only had enough food for themselves. They didn't have any to share. When Skippy had all the food he could ever want he could have simply refused to share with his friends, but he didn't do that. He welcomed his friends to eat the mushroom with him.

Prompts: Have puppets and act out the story. This will help students remember it better.

Craft Element:
Reading- Teach students how to act in the classroom (Have good classroom behavior)
Reading- Teaches students about feelings
Reading- Teach settings, characters, problems, resolution, etc.
Science- Teach students what plants need in order to grow. (Plant cycle)

Summary: On one cold night, both Jimmy and Nelly decided to go to bed early. Jimmy is awakening in the middle of the night to a funny sound. It is a flying train. Jimmy and Nelly hop on the train and go on an adventure with their puppy, kitty, dolly, and teddy. They travel to outer space where they are greeted by stars, the moon, the sun, and a lot more. The children realize that they are going to be late for school, so they jump out of the flying train. The next thing to happen is Jimmy’s mom is coming into his room to check on him because she thought he was having a bad dream. So was he dreaming or did his sister and him really travel to outer space?

Critique: This is a cute little book. It is very easy to download it on your computer and make copy's for your students to use. It is not a hard book to read. The words are really simple. Plus, it helps teaches children about outer space.

Prompts: Ask students questions about outer space before reading the book to the class to see prior knowledge.
Have pictures on a note card of the things mentioned in the book from outer space. Hold them up to the class to see if they know what the pictures are. Then while you are reading the book hold the picture up when you talk about it in the book.

Craft Elements:
Math: Use this book for counting. Make trains and put different numbers on them. Then have the students put the numbers in order and count them.
Reading/Writing- Have students told you rather they went to space or it was dream, while providing why they think the way they do.
Reading- Good book to talk about setting, characters, and a lot more.
Reading/Science- This is a good book to read to the students to introduce the topic of space. It talks about how the stars are all over the sky, how the moon is a lot bigger then it appears from earth, and how we need the sun to live. Very education book.

Character: Skippy, his younger brother, his friends, rain, sun, earth

Setting: Spring in the forest

Theme: Family, friendship, forgiving, sharing

Summary: A bunny named Skippy is out to gather food for his younger brother. Sadly, he couldn't find anything. He turns to his friends to plead for food only to be turned down. He plops down on the meadow, crying for his poor brother when he finds a dried up mushroom bud. He plants the seed and prays for it to grow quickly. The sun, the rain, and the earth feel sorry for him and help it to grow very fast into a giant mushroom. It was too big for him and his brother, so Skippy calls all of his friends to share. Of course, Skippy does not forget to thank the sun, the rain, and the earth. Using the giant mushroom as their shelter and food, they live happily ever after.

Review: This book can teach children to embrace those who are in need and to reach out to everyone when it comes to sharing, even to those who were less hospitable to them. I was touched by Skippy's good and warm heart. Also it discusses science, describing what a plant needs in order to grow. The illustrations are rather simple, but to-the-point and easily deliver the feelings of Skippy.

Curriculum ties: Science (growth of plants)

Award: National Children's Foundation, Best Book
