As an NOC officer at the CIA, Sally Parnell spent her life fighting the proliferation of nuclear weapons. But when she brought good news out of Niger—that Saddam Hussein had in fact not tried to purchase uranium—the Administration of President Peter Howland outed and disgraced her, as they had gone to great lengths to plant evidence to the contrary, needing the threat of Saddam’s nuclear terrorism to start the war they wanted. In betraying Sally’s undercover status to the world, however, the Administration also revealed countless foreign agents Sally had recruited during her career—dozens of which would consequently be captured, interrogated, and executed.

At The Washington Observer, hill reporter Tobias Hallström discovered the existence of the Niger Documents and the impossibility of their assertions; but before he could find proof he got scooped—scooped by his paper’s hotshot editorialist, who slandered Sally Parnell at the President’s orders. Outraged by his paper’s complicity and desperate to atone for their despicable actions, Tobias offers Sally his contacts, his resources, and his unequivocal help. Confused by her own government’s betrayal and feeling that she had failed her agents, Sally accepts Tobias’s help and together they struggle to uncover who in the Administration was responsible for her outing and her agents’ deaths. Though resisted at every turn, they soon discover that revealing her identity was only one piece of a larger and more sinister puzzle, a rhetorical construction to strong arm the nation into war.

Inspired by the actual events which led to the Iraq War, The Parnell Affair is a meticulously researched fictional account of one of America’s most contentious eras. Detailing the interplay between such controversial topics as the outing of Valerie Plame (Wilson), the forged Niger Documents, and the torture of prisoners, The Parnell Affair draws into focus the key elements of America’s march toward war.
