The arbitration is a comedy on the issues of rape, marriage and parenthood as they would be tightly coupled with Athenian citizenship. I found a remarkable quote at the end of the play where a slave chastises old Smikrines who, unaware of the happy resolution, insists on carrying his daughter away. The discussion derives into a critic of:
- retributive religion and the unreasonableness of assuming gods are concerned with distributing justice to humans one by one, as a way to shrink away from our own responsibilities in life
- and attributing our destiny to the gods as opposed to the more powerful grip that our own character has in the outcome of our lives.
The Shield is an incomplete work but the argument can be followed with the help of some tentative reconstruction. A character, Smikrines, plays the archetypical greedy (Theophrastus' characters?) and attempts to marry his newly rich niece to inherit her wealth. By the cunning of a Frygian slave, Doas, who also comes out, interestingly, above all the rest of the cast in morals and intelligence, Smikrines is undone and the play most probably ends with the niece and her brother happily reunited and marrying their counterparts. The end of the play, acts 4 & 5, are mostly missing, a pity as it somehow robs the play of its most interesting and funny parts.… (altro)
