It was a fun read, though a little bit deceiving. I expected a more rigorous survey of the current research and this was more of a colorful snapshot. I also expected the author to be a lot more scientific with his own experiments but he pretty much half-asses his own project.

Great read for party conversations and Dan Hurley is an entertaining voice but overall a pretty forgettable book.

Excellent book. Okay, I was primed to like it, as I've been fascinated for many, many years with intelligence, IQ test, cognitive issues and brain functions. I've never believed (admittedly, without any evidence to confirm or deny) that intelligence change was one-way -negative - only...plus I liked Josh Foer's Moonwalking With Einstein (mind you, I've also never confused intelligence and IQ with memory.) Where Moonwalking focused on memory and extreme memory competitions, Smarter covered so much more ground. From brain training software to regimens to drugs, Hurley looks at the current and past research. As is Foer, he's a journalist and not an "expert", and he does an excellent job making the subject matter readable.

What I really liked about Hurley's book is that he presented both the proponents for the various approaches and the critics. Well balanced. I was aware of a few things Hurley explored but want to check out some of the others. Even if I don't get "smarter", I want to delay getting less smart as long as possible.

If you think you know all you need to know about Diabetes and what causes it, I strongly recommend you give this book a read and realize just how complex the subject really is. This rising disease goes beyond the simple "Fat Man's" disease it has been so commonly labeled. Dan Hurley, a type 1 diabetic himself, takes a deep dive into the statistics regarding the rise of diabetes, then drives right into the variety of possible causes currently under research, and finally concludes with a in depth discussion about what possible cures exist or may be coming in the near future. I guarantee you will walk away from this one with a much better understanding of the many issues faced by today's diabetics… (altro)
