An excellent collection of essays honoring one of my most-admired patristics scholars, Robert Louis Wilken. I'll admit that I didn't read every essay, but the ones I did read were consistently enjoyable and, yes, eloquent.

Probably not a good introduction for someone who hasn't done much reading in the Fathers themselves, but a good orientation to issues in the field of ancient biblical interpretation for those who have.

This is a WONDERFUL book. Jovinian was outed as a terrible heretic in the c4th, mainly as a result of the warped psychopathology of St Jerome: his offence was simply to have suggested that, all other things being equal, it mattered not in the least whether one was celibate or married so long as one fulfilled the promises made in one's Baptism. David Hunter is much too responsible a scholar to have drawn out the implications for us today - but this very thorough and measured exposition of the debate back then resonates hugely powerfully with the tensions between those of us who try to be gender/sexuality-inclusive and the misogynies and homophobia with which we are confronted. This seems to me to be a very helpful source book for deriving a deep basis in the Tradition for what I call 'progressive Christianity'.… (altro)
