Although we're in Houston at the moment, we spent a lot of years in Seattle. So I can attest that the city is not only very walkable, but there's a lot to see that's worth taking the time and making the effort to see on foot. The cliché is that Seattle is "a city of neighborhoods," but it's a cliché because it's true, and it means it's worth getting out of the downtown core (though this book has good downtown walks too) and going beyond tourism standards like the Market and a ferry-ride, to see what's hidden in less traveled areas. Though locals might not think a stroll up Phinney Ridge, through Laurelhurst, around the Central District, or along West Marginal Way is the sort of thing to do with family from out of town, author Clark Humphrey makes a good case that there's a lot to see even in these somewhat untouristy settings.

I always have to wonder about the utility of printed guidebooks in an era of tablets and other electronic devices, as well as countless apps for walking most any given city. Nevertheless, "Walking Seattle" is a great reference for visitors to carry in their bag or locals to keep in their guest bedroom. There's a lot to see in that beautiful city, and the 35 tours described here will lead you to much of it.… (altro)
