Marvelous Mabel was a figure skater. While little is known of the first part of her life, we do know it was hard. She had a desire to learn to ice skate, but many doors were closed to her because she was not born white. But this little girl never gave up! She became one of the first black women ever inducted into multiple skating Hall of Fame’s because her love of the sport knew no bounds. When the doors closed on her competing, she became a coach. She coached anyone because everyone should have opportunities.… (altro)

This book was one of the most inspirational books I have ever read. Mabel Fairbanks is known as the first black figure skater. She became an orphan at a young age, then went to live with her brother who later threw her out, forcing her to live on on the streets until a woman took her in as nanny to her young child. It was at this point when Mabel was pushing the baby stroller through Central Park that she discovered ice skating. This was a time when racism was unfortunately prevalent and it was not easy for Mabel follow her dream of becoming a figure skater. Despite constantly being turned away because of the color of her skin, she kept going. I loved this. It's sad that Mabel did not get the full recognition that she deserves while she was alive but I'm glad people are finally seeing how talented, resilient, and just incredible this woman was.… (altro)

This true story is powerful, and it addresses gender roles and goals. Marcenia loves baseball, but everyone around her criticizes her for playing a boy's sport. Marcenia's parents doubted her by stating she's not going to be a pro-player, she will be a maid, or teacher like the other women do. Marcenia didn't want to be like the other girls. She wanted to play baseball, she didn't look at baseball as a man's sport, she just knew baseball was fun. Marcenia had to prove it to the boys that she played ball with Mr. Street and her father so that she can be allowed to go to baseball camp. They still believe girls should not play baseball, but in the end, they were convinced they should be allowed to play. I believe the theme of this story is to follow your dreams because Marcenia was determined and passionate about baseball. This is inspiring for young girls who go through adversity, trying to accomplish their goals. Marcenia believed and kept going because she didn't give up. I would read this story to the children because I know they will enjoy it.… (altro)
